What Klew is

Klew is a free daily crossword app for the web and iOS. A new mini, midi, and daily crossword drop every morning, with a 13×13 weekly on Sundays. The smallest takes a minute; the largest is a proper Sunday solve. Free to play, no ads, no signup required, with cross-device sync if you do sign in. Available now in a browser at klew.app and on iOS via the App Store.

Founder

Henry Pendleton is an iOS developer based in Charleston, SC. Klew is a solo project he built over the past year, growing out of a personal frustration with paid daily crossword apps. He’s the sole editor: every puzzle that ships has his final approval. The construction workflow is described in detail below.

How Klew puzzles are made

Klew puzzles move through a multi-step pipeline: a custom Rust solver handles grid fill (constraint satisfaction over a 538,000-word scored dictionary), an AI quality screen ranks candidate fills, and AI generates clue alternatives for each entry. A human editor (Henry) then reviews, selects, edits, or hand-writes each clue and approves every grid before publication. Henry takes editorial responsibility for every puzzle that ships.

The technology is the tool, not the author. The same kind of autofill software constructors have used for decades is paired with modern language models for clue drafting and a human editor for quality and voice.
